List of states considering laws similar to Arizona’s SB1070
Below is a list of states or politicians who have either introduced or are prepared to introduce legislation similar to Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070. Please leave comments below if there are more states or politicians with similar comments.
Texas
- ABC News reports that state Rep. Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball, will introduce a bill in the Texas Legislature similar to the controversial immigration measure passed into law in Arizona. Riddle says the proposed bill “gives law enforcement officers additional tools, if they have the reasonable suspicion that there is a violation of a law, to inquire into an individual’s immigration status.” (via Texas Tribune)
Idaho
- A northern Idaho lawmaker says he’ll push Arizona-style immigration reform if voters return him to the state Legislature. (via Arizona Daily Sun)
Utah
- Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, told the Deseret News Monday he’s started work on drafting a bill for the 2011 Utah legislative session that uses the Arizona statute as a model — a move he said is necessary to stanch the flow of illegal immigrants into the Beehive State. (via Deseret News)
Missouri
- Arizona’s strict new immigration law has galvanized some Missouri lawmakers to propose similar rules for the Show-Me State. “I am going to try,” said state Rep. Mark Parkinson, R.-St. Charles. “It’s another tool to curb illegal immigration.” (via News Leader)
North Carolina
- The state senator who represents Surry County is working toward passage of an immigration law in North Carolina similar to Arizona’s. Sen. Don East has filed a joint resolution aimed at allowing a version of Arizona’s immigration bill to be filed during the short session of the state Legislature which is now under way. Maryland
- Delegate Patrick McDonough, R-Baltimore County, has introduced at least 11 reform measures over the years and is leading the charge against illegal immigration in Maryland. He’s drafting another exactly like the one signed into law on Friday in Arizona requiring police to determine the immigration status of any individual who raises “reasonable suspicion” that they are an illegal alien. Police would then make an arrest without a warrant for any public offense that could cause deportation. (via WBAL-TV)
Minnesota
- The latest example is happening in Minnesota, where GOP state Rep. Steve Drazkowski is getting ready to introduce a similar measure. The interesting thing here is that Drazkowski and other proponents of the Arizona immigration bill say they’re merely enforcing federal statutes within their borders. But Drazkowski himself is also a co-author of a proposal to have Minnesota nullify federal laws. (via Talking Points Memo)
Colorado
- Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott McInnis on Wednesday staked out a conservative position on immigration, vowing to sign a bill similar to Arizona’s tough immigration enforcement law if it reached his desk while governor. (via Denver Post)
Rhode Island
- Immigrant and workers’ rights advocates celebrated a victory in Rhode Island this week with the announcement that State Rep. Peter Palumbo’s anti-immigrant bill, closely based on Arizona’s widely criticized SB 1070, would not get a hearing. (via Progressive States)
Ohio
- A conservative state representative who has proposed several immigration-related bills says Ohio needs to follow Arizona’s lead and pass a real crackdown on undocumented workers. Statehouse correspondent Karen Kasler reports. (via WCPN.org)
Oklahoma
- Conservative lawmakers in Oklahoma, buoyed by the passage of SB 1070, say they will introduce a similar bill in their state. In fact, Republican state Rep. Randy Terrill told The Associated Press that Oklahoma may even take Arizona’s example further and include assets seizure provisions and harsher penalties for illegal immigrants. (via NY Daily News)
Georgia
- Arizona just took its place in the Georgia race for governor. This from a press release issued by the Republican campaign of Nathan Deal, the former congressman. (via AJC)
South Carolina
- South Carolina could be the next stop for protests, international attention and controversy over immigration. (via WSPA)
