Hispanic Heritage Month

Voto Latino Guest Column: Hispanic Heritage Month  by Adryana Boyne

-1

Hispanic Heritage Month or Mes de la Herencia Hispana is a month of celebrations. It was started in 1968 with the purpose of recognizing the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. President Lyndon Johnson was the first President by celebrating Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15th and ending on October 15. It is important to me because Hispanics have accomplished good things, and it reminds the rest of the country that we are part of our great country. Most Hispanics are people with strong values.  I am the national director of VOCES Action, an organization that  communicates conservative values within and through the Latino population. We educate and empower Latinos to express their conservative social, fiscal, and moral values in order to help our nation regain and preserve its moral heritage. We also serve as a bridge between non-Hispanics and Hispanics on conservative issues and values. We carry out these purposes in Spanish and English media—including TV, radio and Internet—as well as speaking engagements, workshops, and publicity at civic, social, and religious groups. VOCES Action is a  501 (c) 4 non- profit organization.    Adryana Boyne is National Director of VOCES Action and has been honored during Hispanic Heritage Month in 2009 by the Republican National Committee as one the Hispanic Republicans Making their Voices Heard
