Posted on February 03, 2012

We’ve been keeping track of the GOP primaries and next up for Mitt Romney and company is the great state of Nevada. After winning in Florida by such a wide margin, Romney is trying to tie up the nomination as soon as possible in order to focus his efforts on the race against President Obama.
For those of you who aren’t too familiar with the Silver State, here are a couple of quick facts about Latinos and the current state of affairs in Nevada:
- Latinos make up 26.5% of the state’s total population
- Over the last ten years approximately 46% of the total population growth in the state was due to growth in the state’s Latino population
- There are 224,000 voting-eligible Latinos in the state, or 14% of the state’s electorate
- Latinos are an influential voting bloc in the state: in the 2010 mid-term elections 90% of Latinos voted for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, helping him defeat his opponent Sharron Angle in one of the most competitive races in the country
The top priority for most Nevadans is the economy:
- Nevada has had one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country for the past several years; according to the New York Times, one in every 175 homes in the state is in foreclosure
- Nevada also has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the country; the unemployment rate in the state is approximately 13% (the national unemployment rate is 8.3%)
