Youth trek from Miami to DC for immigrant rights

MIAMI — While their fellow college students recovered from the night’s revelry, four South Floridians celebrated the New Year with a more active – and activist – approach.

The group set out Friday to begin a 1,500 mile journey they are calling the “Trail of Dreams,” from Miami’s historic Freedom Tower to Washington, D.C. The goal is to raise support for legislation that would include a path to citizenship for eligible [undocumented] immigrants.

Chavez-Thompson files for Texas Lieutenant Governor

Retired national AFL-CIO executive vice president Linda Chavez-Thompson of San Antonio has decided to run for lieutenant governor and will file this afternoon in the March 2 Democratic primary, her campaign just announced.

“She’s a petite ball of fire,” said state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio. “She has a big heart. For the Democrats, she is the Hispanic.”
