How it affects the nation

We are the nation’s fastest growing ethnic group, and largest ethnic minority. But in the 2000 Census, nearly one million Latinos went uncounted, affecting the drawing of Congressional districts and the distribution of federal money.

The government only provides programs for people it knows will use them – so if the government doesn’t know we’re here, how can they accurately plan for the programs and systems we use everyday?

What we tell the Census about how we work, live, and play impacts four main areas: Public Programs, Political Representation, Infrastructure, and Businesses. Everything from how easy – or difficult – it is to open up your own business, pay for college, or get medical care will be determined by Census data.
