VL STATEMENT ON SB 1070
VOTO LATINO DECRIES PASSAGE OF RACIAL PROFILING BILL IN ARIZONA
April 23, 2010, Washington, D.C. – Voto Latino condemns the passing of SB 1070, signed into law by Arizona governor Jan Brewer at 4:30 pm EST today. The bill grants law enforcement officers the ability to, without a warrant, arrest any person whom the officer, with probable cause, believes might be illegally residing in the U.S.
Official Statement on behalf of Voto Latino by Maria Teresa Kumar, Founding Executive Director:
“SB 1070 provides a record level of legal impunity for profiling individuals based purely on their physical appearance. With this new legislation, the almost 2 million Arizonans of Hispanic descent run the risk of being stopped by the police at will, and will be given zero means of recourse against such actions.
“The law indirectly criminalizes an entire community whereby first generation legal residents and fifth generation American citizens, alike, are vulnerable. Looks alone can serve as basis for arrest.
“This legislation is unconstructive and divisive. It tears local communities apart instead of finding common sense solutions to solve problems. Nobody wins.”
Voto Latino’s membership base is outraged at the passage of SB 1070, and are making their voices heard via Voto Latino’s social networking and mobile platforms, which include www.becountedrepresent.com, Facebook.com/votolatino, Twitter.com/votolatino, and texting “AZ” to 738674.
In addition, Voto Latino is also mobilizing its millenial NGO coalition, a network of local and national youth organizations with whom the organization has partnered on “get out the vote” and census participation initiatives, to formally protest this affront to the liberty of Americans in Arizona.

This Sunday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer will consider a bill (known as SB 1070) that would authorize officers to pull over, question, and detain anyone if they have a “reasonable suspicion” to believe they are in this country without proper documentation. It would, in effect, legalize racial profiling in Arizona.

The Republican party for the exception of some are misguided in taking this constitional
faux pas messure in the state of Arizona. If the President of the United Staes Of America
does not act by decree to declare this action illegal under the law it will destroy any legitimacy for our government to dictate or suggest to rouge regimes in the world they are opressing the human rights of their citizens.
Immigration must be addressed in a comprehensive manner in order to fix it once and for all. Our borders must be respected and laws enforced by the federal government. If not, chaos will take place and the rule of law will suffer more than the people it should protect equally and fairly. The weak are always subject to attack by demagogic politicians. However, the majority of Americans, in my opinion, are descent people who will not tolorate injustice. The rights of one American cannot be trampled upon by anyone including an intolirant governor of any state.
Liz says:
The new immigration law in AZ is devastating to the Latino community and shameful to our nation. Busloads of Hispanics from all over the US should descend on the streets of AZ dressed like bums to test their magical ability to tell citizens/residents apart from people who are here illegally. A new generation of freedom riders. Are there any plans for VL-organized protests? Please keep us updated so we can jump on the bus.

Arizona can pass race base laws, pass Birthers laws and the state can continue to boycott Martin Luther King Day, well the rest of the Country can boycott the state of Arizona and spank them where it hurts them the most their pocket book. Their phony patriotism is sickening, they are just racists going by another name. We all know you are just itching to put a sheet on their head? Let’s face it the Republicans had eight years to deal with health care, immigration, climate change and financial oversight and governance and they failed. It appears that the Republican Party is only good at starting wars (two in eight years, with fat War profiteering contracts to friends of Cheney/Bush) but not at winning wars as seen by the continuing line of body bags that keep coming home. The Republicans party will continue turned inward to their old fashion obstructionist party (and their Confederacy appreciation roots) because they continue to allow a small portions (but very loud portion) of their party of “birthers, baggers and blowhards” to rule their party. I will admit that this fringe is very good at playing “Follow the Leader” by listening to their dullard leaders, Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush, Savage, Sarah Bailin, Orly Taitz, Victoria Jackson, Michele Bachmann and the rest of the Blowhards and acting as ill programmed robots (they have already acted against doctors that perform abortions). The Birthers and the Tea party crowd think they can scare, intimidate and force others to go along with them by comments like “This time we came unarmed”, let me tell you something not all ex-military join the fringe militia crazies who don’t pay taxes and run around with face paint in the parks playing commando, the majority are mature and understand that the world is more complicated and grey than the black and white that these simpleton make it out to be and that my friend is the point. The world is complicated and people like Hamilton, Lincoln, and Roosevelt believed that we should use government a little to increase social mobility, now it’s about dancing around the claim of government is the problem. The sainted Reagan passed the biggest tax increase in American history and as a result federal employment increased, but facts are lost when mired in mysticism and superstition. For a party that gave us Abraham Lincoln, it is tragic that the ranks are filled with too many empty suits and the crazy Birthers who have not learned that the way our courts work is that you get a competent lawyer, verifiable facts and present them to a judge, if the facts are real and not half baked internet lies, then, and only then, do you proceed to trial. The Birthers seem to be having a problem with their so called “facts”. Let’s face it no one will take the Birthers seriously until they win a case, but until then, you will continue to appear dumb, crazy or racist, or maybe all three. I heard that Orly Taitz now wants to investigate the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC), she wants to re-establish a family values party, that’s like saying that the Catholic Church cares about the welling being of children in their care, too late for that.
Yocheved says:
How do we get involved? I really want to join organized efforts to push against this racism.
Jo Dell Pickens says:
I have seen the signs “Where is the reform?”. The reform is on Nov. 3, 2010. It is the day that all the US House has reelection. Each and everyone in the Congress is up for reelection. The US Senate has 33 of 100 members facing reelection! AND, 37 of 50 Governors have an election. EVERY Latino that has the right to vote needs to be at the polls If you have a child born in the US and is of the age of 18, they need to register to vote. I work with Pres. Lobo of Honduras, and the countries of Central America are planning a resolution for Washington. It will help reform immigration in a positive and productive manner for immigrants. Check your local politicians for which are considerate of the immigrants. If there is some that are negative and racist, vote to put another in their place. Letters, phone calls ans emails do not get Wasgington’s attention, only the thought of loosing their seat can do that. Latinos can make a difference with their votes and it does not matter what country you come from! If you do not have the right to vote, you need to be spreading the word to everyone who to vote for, to go vote and get everyone at the poll. It is your right as a citizen to vote! My grandmother always said “If you do not vote, then do not complain!” See you on Nov. 3!!!!
