This week, a House Republican leader joined Democrats when he announced his opposition to a Republican-backed Senate amendment that would hijack the 2010 Census and stop it in its tracks if it does not include questions on immigration status.
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Last week, CNN launched its “Latino in America” series, which tells the stories of Latinos from across the country. There’s just one thing missing: Lou Dobbs. Our friends at Presente.org have teamed with award-winning filmmaker Arturo Perez to create a powerful clip: “CNN: Lou Dobs or Latinos in America.” Watch the video – we promise you, you’ll be shocked. Add your voice to the thousands of others demanding that CNN dump Lou Dobbs.
Owner tells Hispanic workers to change names
TAOS, N.M. – Larry Whitten marched into this northern New Mexico town in late July on a mission: resurrect a failing hotel.
The tough-talking former Marine immediately laid down some new rules. Among them, he forbade the Hispanic workers at the run-down, Southwestern adobe-style hotel from speaking Spanish in his presence (he thought they’d be talking about him), and ordered some to Anglicize their names.

Health care + GOP + Immigration
Health care not done, GOP changes subject back to immigration
WASHINGTON — Immigration, an issue placed on the congressional backburner by attempts to revamp the nation’s health care system, is percolating again as Republican lawmakers are pushing a measure that would require U.S. Census forms to include a question about the citizenship status of respondents.

Twitter Reacts To CNN’s Latino In America With Soledad O’Brien
Part one of CNN’s two-part special, Latino in America, aired last night, as many of you know. And, as many might have guessed, the response to the Soledad O’Brien-led documentary was mixed.
As there is no better way to gauge an immediate response to a pop culture event (or to delight in the unbridled misogyny that is the trending topic #shescutebut) than by checking out what people are saying via Twitter, we browsed through some reactions hashmarked #LatinoInAmerica (which, much to the chagrin of many on the networking site, did not become a trending topic). Here, we’ll take a look at a few representative Tweets that show some patterns we found among people’s reactions: Click here

Music Stars Demand Records On Bush Administration’s Use Of Music For Torture
A group of prominent musicians are joining a campaign to close Guantanamo Bay and demanding the release of records about what music was used during the potential torture of detainees there and at other facilities.
Some of the more famous names in the music industry are formally lending their prestige to an effort being led by retired generals, progressive groups and a former member of Congress to shut GITMO down. The list includes Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Jackson Browne, Rise Against, Rosanne Cash, Billy Bragg and the Roots, all of whom are joining the broader National Campaign to Close Guantanamo which was launched earlier in the week.

Bill and Betty Garcia moved from New York City to Charlotte, N.C., so their sons could grow up away from the grind and grime of urban life. Now they think they made a mistake: “The boys might have lost a vital connection to their Latino roots.” So the Garcias take the kids back to New York once a year to reestablish their ethnicity, which, according to their parents, they do by playing basketball (which was invented in Kansas) and listening to hip-hop music (which was invented by Jamaican immigrants in New York City).

Congress Ends the Widow Penalty
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The death of a spouse will no longer result in automatic deportation of
widows and widowers and their children, following a historic vote in the Senate today. Ending a
policy traced back at least seventy-one years, Congress has abolished the “widow penalty.”
Thanks to a concerted effort by families, legal counsel and legislators over a period of more than
five years, a horrible practice that added insult to injury is now at an end. Media accounts,
including those in the Washington Post, New York Times, and CBS News 60 Minutes have
drawn attention to the more than two hundred widows and widowers of U.S. citizens facing the
widow penalty. The New York Times Editorial, published April 28, 2009, summarized the issue
and its solution succinctly:

Stand Up Against Vitter's Census Amendment
Don’t Let Fear & Anti-Immigrant Sentiment Win: Stand Up Against Vitter’s Census Amendment
The U.S. Senate is considering an amendment to the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill that if passed, will effectively marginalize all immigrant communities – Anglo, Asian and Brown – living in the United States. The amendment introduced by Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana (R) proposes to include questions in the 2010 Census on immigration status. If passed, the amendment will inject fear into an action required by the U.S. Constitution every ten years. The census provides a population count needed to determine the allocation of federal funds (for everything from schools and hospitals, to highways and public transportation) as well as political representation. Vitter’s amendment hurts already financially strapped local governments by leaving millions uncounted. Because Voto Latino’s mission is to encourage civic participation, the Vitter Amendment directly contradicts our core values. Please contact your representative TODAY to vote against the Vitter Amendment: click here Forward this to your networks- our power is in our numbers!

How to Waste Money and Ruin the Census
With the start of the 2010 census just a few months away, Senator David Vitter, a Republican of Louisiana, wants to cut off financing for the count unless the survey includes a question asking if the respondent is a United States citizen. Aides say he plans to submit an amendment to the census appropriation bill soon.
Why Joe Biden Should Resign
Joe Biden met with CENTCOM chief Gen. David Petraeus this morning to talk about Afghanistan — an issue that has pushed the vice president into the spotlight, landing him on the cover of the latest Newsweek.
I have an idea for how he can capitalize on all the attention, and do what generations to come will always be grateful for: resign.
